Using found objects, 5th grade designed their assemblage art project of a skeleton retablo for the Latin American holiday "Day of the Dead". It was a fun way for me to get to know each student because they designed their retablo based on an activity they enjoyed. To get started, students drew their design, collected found objects, assembled their boxes, painted everything, and finished by adding three dimensional details. The project ended with a self-reflective assessment worksheet and a class critique. Each student presented their artwork, discussed what worked and what they would do differently. Then, they took peer questions and comments.
